My dad and I traveled out of state to Phoenix for an oncology appointment at Mayo Clinic. We had initially planned to pursue care back in our home state. Very unexpectedly, my dad was much more ill than we ever imagined, and we were unable to travel back to our home state. This was very scary and unfamiliar. My dad needed full-time care. We toured a few assisted living homes. Almost immediately upon meeting Christina, I had a feeling it was going to be a good fit for my dad. It felt very scary trusting someone I had just met with my dad, who I love so much. I chose to trust Christina and my dad moved in the next day directly from Mayo. He was already very declined at this point, so I hoped Christina would take extra-great care of him--I knew his needs would be high. Not only did she let me stay with him as long as I needed to, she even set up a bed for me in his room so I could be with him at all times. She went above and beyond. The night he moved in, she made him a special blended soup and got him to eat more than he'd eaten in days. She knew how to encourage him and care for him well and was very attentive to his needs--and he had a lot of them. One of the nights he was in her care, she even slept on the extra bed in his room because he was no longer able to use his call button and he needed sips of water throughout the night. She made sure he had everything he needed. I had to leave one afternoon for a few hours and Christina offered to watched our daughter, bringing out a large tray of art supplies to make sure she had fun things to do. She was kind to our entire family and genuinely cared not only for my dad, but for us and our daughter. She made great food and offered it to us constantly, and fed our daughter several meals as well. Her attitude was so positive, her communication was clear and reliable and I noticed that she had a very calming and patient personality, consistently. Her home is clean and very welcoming. I got an opportunity to talk to another resident who lived in Christina's home, and she seemed so happy to be there. I was dealing with so many unexpected twists and turns. I was doing my best to pivot between my dad's decline, being in an unfamiliar state, trying to understand hospice and the medical system, and trying to wrap my brain around nurses and doctors telling me my dad was actively dying. Christina gave my dad and my family a calm place for the last days of his life. We went from a very chaotic stay at Mayo to Christina's peaceful home, where he got his needs met quickly and calmly. I was able to communicate with my dad and while he was sad he couldn't pass away in his home, he loved Christina and knew she was a wonderful caregiver to him. If you're looking at homes to put your loved one, without hesitation, I strongly recommend Cornerstone Assisted Living. I call Christina our, "Arizona Angel." She truly is such a selfless, warm, caring and kind person. I thank God for Christina and Cornerstone.
