This location was recommended to us through A Place for Mom - we looked at several other AL but $ and the room were not pleasing to us. We toured this location with Mitchell and were very impressed with the amenities and kindness of the staff. We did not choose this facility since we realized there was another Spectrum AL closer to our home. We have chosen the closer location and mom has already been moved in - no complaints from her yet! What I would have liked to know beforehand:
Southview makes an earnest effort to care for their residents, but the state mandated minimums for healthcare worker to resident ratios just aren't designed for the kind of care advertised. My family member has diabetes and lived in the Memory care unit for 5 months. Although Southview staff had initially confirmed that they were well equipped to care for a diabetic with dementia, in the 5 months he lived there, his blood sugar was an average of 300, he gained 24 pounds, and developed diabetic ulcers on his legs that both his primary care physician and his podiatrist said put him at extreme risk of diabetic infection resulting in amputation. When I tried to communicate with the nursing staff about his condition, sometimes it would take them over a week to respond, and even then, the responses were snippy and sparse on information.
I sympathize with a lone nurse who is caring for the medical needs of 95 patients with only a handful of med techs to help. That said, when meeting with the sales staff at the beginning of the process, they told me that my family member would have a diabetic diet in their care plan and could have in house podiatry and primary care visits. None of these statements were accurate, and when I followed up with administration and staff on the floor, they were all incredulous that I had thought they were.
We ultimately decided to care for my loved one at home. I understand that that is not an option for everyone. I appreciate the efforts of those that run group care facilities, but I was dismayed at the level of care actually available at such an attractive and expensive facility. I don't know that good group care is available for patients with both diabetes and dementia.
We encountered several issues in the last couple of years of my mother living there. The facility is always understaffed and therefore is unable to provide all the care that is needed. There were several issues with her medication some which went missing, other times it was still billed for even though she had been out of the facility for long periods of time while in hospital/rehab. When trying to get answers from the executive director and director of nursing, their response was always "we don't know, it's not our fault, you will need to contact someone else". Her care plan included twice a week showers and although she was charged for them, they were not always given. In the entire month of April alone, she only received a total of 3 showers from the staff!! The last time she was hospitalized, the discharge orders were that she needed to be in skilled nursing. We immediately cleaned out her apt and moved her but still had to sign a 30 day notice. Although this notice was dated 5/6/25 they took from her bank account, the entire month of June charges instead of only taking the pro rated amount thru 6/6/25. This large withdrawal of nearly $7000 overdrew her bank account and I was told that she hadn't been "discharged" yet and that she would have to wait several weeks to receive any refund check. So NO, I would not recommend this facility to anyone who was looking to place their loved one into assisted living.
Additional information after owners response -
Yes, there was indeed medication missing on 2 separate occasions. Once during the transition of pharmacies and then again when she was out of the facility during an extended hospital/rehab stay. During the transition, both pharmacies delivered a month's worth of medication within days of each other but only 1 month was ever accounted for at Southview. The additional meds were never placed in her file. And during her extended stay, the pharmacy continued to send her meds but Southview had no record of them. I had to go thru the pharmacy to get credits although they had been delivered to the facility. The fact that they were delivered but Southview didn't have them was the issue!
She still has not received any refund for the June charges. They say that they submitted for a refund on 6/9 but it's now 7/1 and still no refund has been received.
The nicest and kindness staff I have ever met! The tour that Mitchell gave us for my Mother was OUTSTANDING, CLEAN, VERY IMPRESSIVE! We decided to have our Mother move in here ASAP.. TY MITCHELL 5STARS!
My mom has been here over a year. She loves it and is happy. The facility is small and nicely updated. Her studio apartment is the perfect size. She enjoys the food and her friends as well as the activities that are available. The staff has been warm and friendly.
